"It's a labour of love for me to stay abreast of developments in renewable energy technology"
There are many people who know firsthand how upsetting it is to get a huge electricity bill. Even living frugally and being extremely careful about electricity usage in the home is no guarantee against ‘bill shock’. Unfortunately, power bills are rising, and there is no way they are going to fall any time soon.
Having retired from his Melbourne based security business back in 2007, Energy Makers Director Dale Rhall, experienced this bill shock first hand.
“I will never forget opening the power bill, and it was $700,” Dale said. “And that was just for a household of two people! It was a real wake up call to me, and I started to look seriously into what I considered to be viable forms of renewable energy. I started to research solar energy (remember, this was nearly ten years ago), and the more I learned, the more I realised that as a society, we really do have to re-think our strategy around renewable energy."
What's the best system for your situation
"I started work with a solar company, which gave me an excellent grounding in the ins and outs of solar energy, and how best to help people in both domestic and commercial situations. It's all about finding a solution to their individual needs. When I'm talking to my clients, I educate them about the best type of system specifically for their situation, and then I put together a plan that they clearly understand is an investment plan, rather than a flat financial outlay.
"Because I have the capacity to source all kinds of technology from innovators around the world, I am not wedded to any particular supplier or technology, and I can put together the specific components to suit them. I like to spend time in the early stages talking with my clients, because it is enormously useful for them to work out how much power they are using, and when. This informs the kind of system they purchase."
Power bill reduced from $24,000 to zero
"It is incredibly gratifying when I am able to help domestic clients to reduce their power bills to a point that is negligible. The commercial projects are extremely exciting to work on, and we have clients in large motels out in western Queensland who have been able to reduce their power and gas bills from up to $24,000 per month, to zero. Can you imagine what that does to the bottom line of a business?
"What is even more exciting, is the fact that solar is a mature technology, and Hydrogen (which is an extension of solar), is rapidly emerging around the globe as a technology that could revolutionise our lives and dramatically reduce our dependance on fossil fuels. It is worth bearing in mind, that fossil fuels are a finite resource. It is up to us now to explore alternatives that are safe, reliable and inexpensive."
Solar & Hydrogen: safe, reliable, inexpensive
"At the moment, Hydrogen is far more mainstream in Europe. What most people don’t know is that every car manufacturer has developed a Hydrogen fuel cell car (HFC). In California right now, you can actually purchase a Hyundai HFC car for $500 per month, but it runs for free, forever. Very exciting stuff.
"Australia has a policy to retain 20% of its fuel supplies in country. This has recently materialised to actually be only 3%. The big picture of this means we need to build sites capable of generating our own fuel, as well as creating fuel that is environmentally responsible.
"This is where hydrogen is omnipotent. Not only is it easy to create but it does not have the greenhouse gas issues to that of natural gas. The generation of our own fuel will allow us to rectify this imbalance and protect ourselves from any external source deciding to cease supply. I sincerely believe that to construct a trial plant in Australia that uses solar to create the gas is the only method that the governments will recognise as proof positive that the technology is here and now available.
"It is a labour of love for me to stay abreast of these developments in renewable energy technology. In the meantime, I am helping home and business owners avoid the dreaded ‘bill shock’ by tailoring, sourcing and installing the best components and systems for their situation."
